They say behind every successful man is a woman, but for Sheleen Chand, her success has been through her husband Kamal Narayan’s sacrifice.

Taking her husband’s advice, Ms Chand decided to complete her Bachelor of Education (secondary) programme, majoring in Biology and Chemistry at the Fiji National University (FNU).

However, they had to make a life changing decision.

Mr Narayan, who had been a Police Officer for about nine years, decided to resign to look after their three daughters; the oldest was in Year 4, the second was in Year 2 and the third was a one-year-old at the time.

‘To see my husband sacrifice for our family means a lot to me’

Ms Chand, who recently graduated from the FNU with a Bachelor of Education, is thankful for her husband who stood by her.

She said her father passed away in 2003, when she was in her first year in university and had to drop out due to financial reasons in order to start working.

“My husband encouraged me to go back and study and in 2015 I resumed my studies and now I have attained my degree.

“I am so blessed to have a husband who took on both roles when I was studying in Lautoka. I know it was not easy and I thank him for always being there.

“To see my husband sacrifice for our family means a lot to me. To be successful, there should be contribution from both sides. We had to make a lot of sacrifices, but we are happy that we got the outcome we wanted.”

Mr Narayan spoke about how proud he was of his wife’s achievement.

“I had to look after our three daughters at the time. It was hard at first, but I know I had to be strong for my wife and I,” Mr Narayan said.

“I can say that all the sacrifices I have made for my family were worth it. I am happy and proud of her.”

Ms Chand plans to continue her studies for Postgraduate. She is currently a teacher at Dudley High School in Suva.

Mr Narayan currently has a farm in Labasa, runs their business and looks after their children.
