I must have just gotten there because the light was still red. Everything happened in just seconds. I saw them running to the arcade. They work in pairs with one getting your attention from your car door and the other one opening the bag.

Members of the public must be always vigilant because opportunists are smart at taking advantage of opportunity to commit a crime.

The timely advice from Fiji Police Force follows an alleged grab and run attempt on a woman which failed. The alleged attempt took place in the heart of Suva City yesterday.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said commuters were advised to be aware of their surroundings and always keep valuables safe.

Kelsey Jannif almost became the victim of the grab and run incident.

She is now warning people to be more alert after two men, who allegedly tried to rob her, were unsuccessful.

Ms Jannif had stopped at the Westpac Suva main branch traffic light on her way to the Suva Central car park. It was between 9 to 10am on Monday, April 25.

“A guy was standing there and tapping on my side of the window; I couldn’t see his head but could only see his body. When I turned around in the corner of my eye, I saw the car door open and a hand came in and opened my bag,” Ms Janiff alleged.

“I leaned over, grabbed my bag and I screamed on top of my lungs. He closed the car door slowly and made his getaway.

“I must have just gotten there because the light was still red. Everything happened in just seconds. I saw them running to the arcade. They work in pairs with one getting your attention from your car door and the other one opens the bag.”

Ms Jannif warned women to always lock their vehicles when driving.

“When I got out of the car to close the door properly, I saw a cloth on the door handle. I realise what these guys are doing is trying not to leave their fingerprints,” she alleged.

“They are really getting smart.

“They wait for the red-light knowing women leave their handbag on the passenger’s seat.

“Women, please be careful and always lock your door.”
