A woman, 45, is recovering at the Lautoka Aspen Hospital after sustaining serious injuries from allegedly falling from a height between 10-12 metres at a swimming spot in Lautoka last Thursday.

The woman was rescued by National Fire Authority (NFA) personnel from the waterfall at Vesi Crescent Creek in Lautoka.

It is understood that she received injuries to her shoulder, an arm, and lower back.

NFA said in a statement on Friday that the woman was returning from the shop when she tried to wash her feet in the water, but slipped and fell into the creek.

The rescue team, comprised of six firefighters and two off-duty officers, responded with two trucks, NFA chief executive officer Puamau Sowane said.

Call for caution

“Parts of the country are experiencing bad weather, especially flooding, and we urge members of the public to exercise caution,” he said.

Flood waters and swift water rescue were among the NFA’s area of expertise when the National Fire Service Act of 1994 was amended in 2009.
