Women participation in the Great Council of Chief (GCC) meeting is relevant and important.

GCC review team member, Mereani Rokotuibau shared this with the University of the South Pacific iTaukei Students Association during consultations held at the university yesterday.

Ms Rokotuibau highlighted that in some places they had visited, questions that normally came up: If the GCC had women participation as well?

Ms Rokotuibau said women who participated in the GCC were women leaders in their respective communities, and women who held inherited traditional titles.

She enlightened students that these women were once part of the GCC.

With relevance to this, in 1965 Adi Maraia Pickering Mataitini was elected and allowed to become a member of the council for the first time.

She was elected by the Soqosoqo Vakamarama.
