Women’s Advocate Susana Evening Passes Away At 79

Staunch woman empowerment advocate, devoted catholic and community worker Susana Evening has passed away. The news of her passing was confirmed by the President of the Catholic Women’s League Fiji Oripa Liwaiono yesterday. The pioneering member of the Women’s League passed away on Sunday aged 79.

Staunch woman empowerment advocate, devoted catholic and community worker Susana Evening has passed away.

The news of her passing was confirmed by the President of the Catholic Women’s League Fiji Oripa Liwaiono yesterday.

The pioneering member of the Women’s League passed away on Sunday aged 79.

Mrs Liwaiono said the Women’s League and the Catholic Church had lost a faithful and dedicated servant, one that had a vision of empowering women economically, in the faith and in service to all.

“We are really saddened at the news of her passing,” she said.

“She was there when the Catholic Women’s League was established back in 1960’s and it has been part of her life for more than four decades."

Ms Liwaiono said the Women’s League was Mrs Evening’s family and she made it a part of her life.

“She was a great helper, very talented, she loved her work in the development of catholic priests in the country and she was always encouraging.”

The late Mrs Evening was a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Fiji and the Fiji 50th Anniversary of Independence commemorative medal for her service to Fiji and its people.

In the course of her career, she has been able to meet famous people like Mother Teresa and the late Pope John Paul II.

The ireguregu will begin on Tuesday, April 19 and she will be laid to rest on Thursday, April 21.

Mrs Evening is survived by her six children and 16 grandchildren.
