Year 7 student suffers broken arm in school incident

A Year 7 student of a Northern school suffered a broken arm during an incident at the school on August 3.

The 13-year-old student of Korotulotulo Primary School was reportedly sitting under a tree with other students when a soccer ball came towards them.

Her mother, Naleshni Devi Nand of Navidamu, Seaqaqa, said another student sitting next to her daughter pushed her while trying to get the ball, resulting in her daughter injuring her arm.

Ms Nand said her daughter was not playing at the time and was sitting with other students who were not taking part in the game.

“She told the class teacher, who tried to tie her hand with a pencil, but the teacher did not call us or take her to the hospital,” she said.

Ms Nand said her daughter was later allowed to return home on the school bus.

When she arrived home, she told her parents about the injury and they took her to hospital. Ms Nand said the school head teacher was not at school at the time as he had attended a funeral.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.

Divisional education officer Northern Ronald Krishna confirmed the incident and said an Education team had visited the school to conduct a preliminary investigation.

He said the student had been sitting outside under a tree when a soccer ball was kicked towards the area while other students were playing.

“During the incident, supervision was there. The accident did happen, but we will rely on the investigation report,” Mr Krishna said.

He said the preliminary internal report would be sent to Education headquarters. The incident is the second reported school-related incident in the Northern Division.
