Opposition Independent Member of Parliament (MP) Rinesh Sharma, while in Labasa recently, hopes to see more young people getting involved in politics.

“Fiji needs young minds, to give innovative ideas for a united Fiji,” Mr Sharma said.

“While a lot has been highlighted about the need to have more women join politics, I urge that we do not forget to encourage Fijian youths. I would like to see more youths involved in politics. While there is a process to follow to get involved, I encourage youths to take up the challenge.

“Our electoral system is an open one anyone has the right to join a party, get selected and be elected.”

He advises youths that entering politics requires a readiness to work for the nation, as it comes with risks, stress, and pressure.

He said one must also be prepared for constant scrutiny on social media, with people criticising both you and your family.

“We’ve had cases of MPs receiving threats, and that’s why I’m asking the youths to first consider: ‘Am I ready for this?’ You need to be able to maintain good mental health and work for the betterment of the country, regardless of the challenges that come your way,” he said.

“We should ask ourselves why we don’t have enough youths getting involved.”

He said he chose to embrace the strength in diversity and unite that strength, despite our differences.

“You can look up to someone but you need to be the best version of yourself and then create your path towards if you want join the legislative body which is politics,” he said.

He said that while being in Parliament may seem appealing to many, the long hours, stress, and lack of family time were important factors to consider.
