In a momentous event that drew thousands to Levuka Vakaviti Village, Ratu Etonia Seru Rokotunaceva was installed as the new Taukei Nabukebuke, Tui Levuka.

The historic installation was marked by the participation of traditional warrior clans, among whom a three-year-old boy from Vuma village captured hearts and headlines.

Josua Kaloutani, the youngest of five siblings, took part in the ceremony with a passion that contradicted his tender age.

His mother, Nanise Nainai, shared insights into the morning’s preparations and Josua’s eagerness.

“Josua woke up early in the morning and told me to hurry up and rush to the place where Tui Levuka will be installed,” said Ms Nainai.

“He was frustrated because I took up much of my time doing something else.”

Josua belongs to the Nasaqiwa clan, the traditional warrior (Bati Balavu) of the Tui Levuka.

Despite his age, he was determined to join his older brothers and other clan members in the installation ceremony.

“There was a different feeling and spirit that came from Josua this morning,” Ms Nainai continued.

“He was desperate to take part in the event. I dressed him from home with the traditional attire.”

Determination

Proudly escorted by his grandfather in a taxi, Josua headed to Levuka Vakaviti Village, where the installation took place.

His determination and pride were evident as he eagerly urged his family to hurry.

“As a mother, I am happy with what Josua has shown today,” Ms Nainai said.

“Even though he is still young, he is determined to take part and show the world that he is the traditional warrior of Tui Levuka.”

Ms Nainai reflected on the significance of the event and her son’s role in it.

“Who knows in the future when the next Tui Levuka will be installed? What Josua did has shown how proud he is and his desire to maintain his tradition and culture.”

The installation of Ratu Etonia as Tui Levuka was not only a celebration of leadership, but also a touching reminder of the enduring traditions and the spirit of the younger generation, alive by young warriors like Josua.
