After years of fundraising and community effort, the Naivikinikini Youth Club has received a government-funded grant for solar-powered lights to improve safety and support development in the Naivikinikini Settlement, says club president Manueli Koroi.

Mr Koroi, who is from Waiqanake, said the grant marked a milestone for the club.

He said the group had worked for years to secure funding for the project through community fundraising efforts.

“We had been trying for this project for a long time, conducting fundraising events. We are thankful that once we opened our bank account, we could get help from the Government,” Mr Koroi said.

He acknowledged the Ministry for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Government for their support.

Mr Koroi said one of the main challenges faced by the group was unemployment among members, with some still studying and unable to contribute financially to fundraising efforts.

He said the club often relied on employed members of the community to support initiatives during fundraising activities.

Despite these challenges, Mr Koroi said the youth group remained committed to improving their community through practical development projects such as solar lighting, which is expected to improve safety and accessibility in the area.
