Rather than waiting for the family or an agency to intervene, a youth group has jumped onboard to repair the home of a senior citizen in Rakiraki.

Baswati, 75, who lives alone, was helped by members of One Nation Our People (ONOP) youth group before the month of Ramadan.

“Our mission never fades and we must serve humanity to continue to appeal to rebuild a home,” group founder Abdul Zorhab said.

He said a resident from Rakiraki approached the group for help.

Ms Baswati had difficulties in living in a home filled with shrubs, and no water supply.

“No elder should endure the pain of sleeping under a broken roof, and together, we can ensure she has a safe home.”

During the second visitation, the members from Suva and Lautoka gathered and cleaned the home before Ramadan.

“We have roofing iron, timbers, nails, metal rods, but we still lack cement and fine sand. We want to finish what we started as the biggest difficulties are logistics, as travelling to Rakiraki is costly,” he said.

The team also called on the community, well-wishers, and kind-hearted individuals to support this noble cause.

“Every contribution, whether in the form of materials, labour, or donations, brings us closer to completing this act of love and service.

“Let’s build hope, restore dignity, and show that we care. Reach out, lend a hand, and be part of this movement of kindness.”
