Vanuatu has secured the top post at the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) for the first time in the organisation's 40-year history, with development leader Dr Anna Naupa appointed as Director General.

In a statement, the Office of the Prime Minister of Vanuatu described the appointment as a historic milestone for the country and the wider Melanesian region.

"Today, Vanuatu stands proud."

The statement noted that since the MSG was founded in 1986 by Papua New Guinea's Paias Wingti, Vanuatu's Fr Walter Lini, Solomon Islands' Ezekiel Alebua and representatives of the FLNKS, Vanuatu had never held the organisation's top executive position.

"Today, that wait ends."

The Vanuatu Government said Dr Naupa's appointment was significant not only for the country but also for women across the Pacific.

"As a woman taking the helm, Ms Naupa's appointment sends a clear message to every young ni-Vanuatu girl: aspire for the best, because the highest offices in our region are within your reach."

The Government said it had full confidence in Dr Naupa's leadership and ability to guide the regional body.

"The Vanuatu Government holds immense confidence in Dr. Naupa's capabilities, leadership, and integrity."

Prime Minister Jotham Napat extended his congratulations and best wishes to the new Director General.

"Prime Minister Jotham Napat extends his warmest congratulations to Dr. Naupa on her successful appointment. He wishes her strength, wisdom, and every success as she takes up this critical role."

The Prime Minister's Office also reflected on the origins of the MSG, saying the organisation was founded on Melanesian solidarity and support for the political aspirations of the Kanak people.

"We know the MSG was born from struggle — its heart has always been the political aspirations of the Kanak people and the big issues facing Melanesia."

While the organisation's work has expanded over the years to include trade, culture and sports, Vanuatu said it was important that the MSG remained true to its founding principles.

"Vanuatu believes the success of the MSG under Dr. Naupa's leadership will depend on never losing sight of that founding spirit — solidarity, justice, and self-determination for our peoples."

The statement concluded with a message of support for Dr Naupa as she prepares to take up the role.

"Anna, you carry not just a title, but the hopes of a region. You carry Vanuatu's pride, Melanesia's trust, and the spirit of Fr. Walter Lini's vision."
