Given the changes in the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, Parliament’s Business Committee will continue to review measures and decide on sitting schedules accordingly.

This was relayed by the Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at the beginning of the May Parliament sitting this morning as Parliament sits to carry out its oversight and law making functions.

MPs living in areas of interest within the Suva containment zone are tuning in remotely as well as those living outside Suva.

Ratu Epeli also said Parliament will meet in future in adherence with the COVID-safe protocols in place.

MPs tuning in virtually will be marked present for the purposes of the standing orders and vote of acclamation will be done.

Before the sitting began, National Federation Party Leader Biman Prasad who was tuning in virtually was instructed to change his background to a neutral one.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum raised a point of order and clarification saying as discussed in the business committee members had agreed to tune in with a neutral background.

However, Mr Prasad had his party symbol as his background.
