Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says Government is going to relook at the size of its Cabinet, with the possibility of reducing the number of ministers and assistant ministers.

Mr Rabuka was responding to concerns raised by the people over relief measures to cushion impact of the global fuel instability on Fijians. He confirmed that the idea is already being considered.

“That is already in the programme which is being considered,” he said.

Overtime payment

Mr Rabuka also defended Government’s decision to stop overtime payments for civil servants, a move that was criticised by unions.

“It’s not just non-payment of overtime. They will be given time off in lieu of overtime, which is the same thing,” he said.

Mr Rabuka added civil servants will not be required to stay back beyond working hours.

“They will not be paid overtime. They work according to their programme and go home on time.”

He stressed the decision was based on financial constraints.

“We cannot afford to keep paying people overtime.” Mr Rabuka said much of the work done during overtime could be completed within normal working hours if properly managed.
