Government is set to deliberate and decide on the global invitation to deploy Fijian peacekeepers to war-torn Gaza.

The invitation was extended by the United States as part of broader international discussions on a peacekeeping presence in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Parliament, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu said the invitation would be part of this year’s parliamentary sitting.

Ratu Naiqama’s address comes amid ongoing concerns of the risks associated with the mission, while being excluded from decision-making.

“Through our peacekeepers, Fiji demonstrates that even a small island nation can play a meaningful role in advancing peace, dialogue, and cooperation on the world stage,” he said.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai earlier indicated the military’s readiness, should Government agree to the invitation.

Major General Kalouniwai acknowledged that a potential mission in Gaza would differ significantly from Fiji’s traditional peacekeeping deployments, which were under United Nations mandates.

“We’ve been serving in peacekeeping for the past 40 to 50 years, but this is a different scenario. There’s always a first time for everything,” he said.

Ratu Naiqama commended Fiji’s disciplined peacekeepers for enhancing the nation’s reputation on the international stage, as the country considers new deployments in collaboration with global partners.

“Our peacekeepers have flown our flag with pride, representing Fiji above their weight in challenging missions worldwide.”

Ratu Naiqama noted that Fiji’s commitment to peacekeeping reflects the nation’s values of service, discipline, and integrity, and reinforces its broader diplomatic influence in regional and global forums.

He also highlighted the strategic importance of Fiji’s peacekeeping role for building international confidence, fostering multilateral cooperation, and promoting regional security, particularly in the Pacific.
