Just 11 months in, PM terminates A-G

Just 11 months on the job, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has dismissed Attorney-General Graham Leung from Cabinet.
The decision, announced on Friday, was made under Section 92(3) (b) of the Constitution and is effective immediately.
“Today, I have decided to exercise the power conferred upon me by Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution, to dismiss Mr Graham Everett Leung as a Minister holding the office of Attorney-General, with immediate effect,” Mr Rabuka said.

“I had appointed Mr Leung as a Minister of my Cabinet to serve as Attorney-General on 5 June 2024,” he said.
“The findings in the recent Report of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the appointment of the FICAC Commissioner, has made it evident to me that Mr Leung’s position in my Cabinet is now untenable.
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but one that is necessary in the best interest of the people that we serve.”
The PM’s decision comes in the wake of the Commission of Inquiry’s findings into the controversial appointment of the FICAC Commissioner-a report that has already triggered significant political fallout.
Mr Leung’s dismissal marks a significant shift within Cabinet and raises questions about further actions stemming from the CoI report.
Mr Leung is a seasoned legal expert with over three decades of experience in constitutional and international law.
He has previously served as Fiji Electoral Commission chairperson, president of the Fiji Law Society, and secretary for Justice and Immigration in Nauru.
The three parties in the coalition are believed to have submitted names for suitable candidates of the role.
