President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has warned of the transformative and potentially disruptive impact of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) on Fiji’s economy, governance and society, urging responsible use, youth empowerment and inclusive development.
Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Parliament session yesterday, Ratu Naiqama emphasised that while AI and emerging technologies present significant opportunities, they also carry risks for public trust, social cohesion and employment.
“Information is now shared at unprecedented speed, yet often without accuracy or accountability,” he said. “Artificial intelligence, if misused, can undermine governance, national unity, and peace. We must guide technology with wisdom, responsibility, and integrity.”

“Our young people must be empowered to seize opportunities in the digital age,” he said.
Ratu Naiqama linked technological change with the need for inclusive economic growth, stressing that prosperity must benefit all communities — urban, rural and maritime — and create decent jobs while protecting vulnerable households.
He called on leaders, educators and the private sector to work together to provide training, innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities for young Fijians, ensuring that technology becomes a driver of progress rather than a source of inequality.
