All maritime transport involving passengers and cargo in the Western Division has been ordered to cease as Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu intensifies near Fiji.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) said the suspension took effect from 9am today due to gale-force winds affecting the region.

At 6am, the Category 3 cyclone was located about 330 kilometres west-northwest of Nadi and moving southeast at 10 knots.

Authorities said the directive applies to all ship masters, owners, agents, port operators, marinas and yacht clubs.

Under the order, vessels are exempt from inward and outward clearance requirements only if they are not carrying passengers or cargo and are heading out to sea solely to take precautionary measures.

MSAF stressed that ship masters retain full authority over their vessels and must make decisions necessary to ensure the safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment.

Officials are urging all maritime operators to closely monitor updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service as conditions continue to deteriorate.
