New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden has labelled the attack on two mosques in Christchurch as New Zealand's darkest days.

New Zealand Police has confirmed that they have a suspect in custody.

"It was an unprecedented act of violence. Police has apprehended a person, but I don't have further details of him yet," Ms Arden said.

What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities – New Zealand is their home – they are us.
