Faced with India’s conventionally superior armed forces, Pakistan has built up stocks of short and medium-range nuclear missiles.

The U.S., China and other world powers have urged restraint from the two nations as tensions escalate following tit-for-tat airstrikes in the wake of a suicide car bombing that killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Feb. 14.

In 2018, India allocated $58 billion, or 2.1% of its GDP to its military budget while Pakistan spent $11bn or 3.6% of its GDP, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
