Ben Maukakala has set his target to put on a dominant performance at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.

He is fighting in the 65-kilogramme weight division.

“It’s my first time at the Commonwealth Games, and I will try my best to apply the knowledge and training I’ve acquired to achieve a good result,” he said.

“It will be the third time for me to represent the country at an international event.”

Maukakala added that boxing has taught him to be disciplined and to adopt a healthy diet.

“This sport will change the behaviour and outlook of youths these days,” he said.

Maukakala and his team-mates have been committed to their training and diet to maintain the required weight for their respective divisions in Glasgow.

“I want to show the world what I’ve learned and I want to give my best in the ring,” he said.

“It’ll be a challenge not having my family there to watch or cheer from the stands. However, motivates me and I’m grateful to God on how far I’ve come.”

Maukakala acknowledged his parents and family for their massive support throughout his boxing journey.

“Our team captain, Jone Davule, has a lot of experience, and he has taught us techniques and offered us advice on international bouts.”

Maukakala has asked the nation to pray for them. “It’s a sport that can change youths and we have also learned self-defence. This sport can take you around the world if you are committed and willing to work hard with discipline.”

“I’m thankful to coach Cam Todd for giving me a chance.”

Maukakala has been boxing for six years. He initially joined Lal’s Boxing Club in 2020 before moving to Brave Boxing Club in 2021.

Maukakala represented Police during the Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing competition last year, where he won a gold medal.
