Boxers still need to master the art of throwing punches.

This was the gist of former Fiji lightweight champion Asesela Dreke’s interview with SUNsports during the Kings Boxing Promotion at Suva’s Vodafone Arena on Saturday night.

“Many of tonight’s boxers would not stand a chance if they were fighting in our time,” he said.

“Boxing is an art. You’ve got to know the punches you are throwing- whether it is a hook, uppercut or a jab.

“Throwing punches goes with your footwork and the timing is important. If you want to throw a combination of punches, then there are ways of doing it.”

However, Dreke said, there were also some talented boxers who had fought, and they need to be fighting regularly to become better.

Former Fiji middleweight champion Nat Ledua highlighted the importance of fitness.

“That is what I see missing from many of the boxers. Fitness is very important especially when you need to be in your weight division,” he said.

Wanted Man!

Fiji heavyweight champion Semi ‘The Equaliser’ Dauloloma is now a wanted man. The 28-year-old made his return to the ring on Saturday night after eight months of inactivity.

Dauloloma beat Sainivalati Ratu on unanimous points decision in their six-round fight. On three occasions, he had lost his mouth guard after copping powerful blows from Ratu.

It was soon after the fight, former Fiji heavyweight champion James ‘The Beast’ Singh made an open challenge to Dauloloma for another title fight.

Then moments later, another call was made for Dauloloma and this time it came from Joseph Kwadjo after recording a 5th Round TKO (technical knockout) win over Kimo Vakalalabure.

Open Challenge

Nauru national Rockanson wants to fight Jese Ravudi next. He made the call after an impressive performance where he stopped Masitoqi Rokoua in the second round in their light welterweight contest.

“I want Jese Ravudi’s title next,” he said.

Rockanson indicated that he had given up the opportunity to represent his country at the Commonwealth Games, so he could make his professional debut.

Later in the night, hard hitting Fiji super middleweight champion Isikeli ‘Bullet’ Senidoko has challenged middleweight champion Winston Hill for a title fight. Senidoko’s left hook did the trick as he knocked out Filise Nabua in the sixth round.
