Veteran trainer Lepani Wilson believes the way forward for professional boxing in the country is the review of the current promulgation.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, he said something is not right with the current structure.

“The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) should be a sanctioning body in approving fights, to ensure that all regulations are adhered to during a promotion, proper matchmaking is done and the rankings is released every quarterly so we can know where the boxers stand in their respective weight divisions,”Wilson said.

“So, where’s the boxing body? When I was the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association (PBWA) president, we report to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“In every promotion, the match commissioner (from the Ministry of Youth and Sports)accompanies the Police to check out the ring on fight day, also that a ring doctor is present and all other regulations are followed.

“The match commissioner works closely with the boxing body and the promoter.

“That is how things are done but today the BCF seems to be doing things that they are not supposed to do.

“During our time the PBWA and Fiji Boxing Council (FBC) had their own promoters and ring officials.”

Wilson also highlighted that for the review to take place, the current BCF board of directors should step down.

“This is because new people are brought in do the review and to ensure that necessary changes take place for the good of the sport,” he added.
