Champ focuses on mentality prep

WBA (World Boxing Association) Oceania Lightweight champion Mikaele Ravalaca is placing a strong emphasis on improving his ring IQ as he prepares to defend his title against challenger Rohit Chauhan under Kings Boxing Promotion on July 25.

Coach Nesta Ranuku said Ravalaca had completed 11 weeks of intensive training, remaining on track for the bout.

“His preparation has been excellent. He’s been training consistently every day and we’re now into the 11th week of camp,” Ranuku said.

“As part of his preparation, we’ve incorporated altitude training and sessions with the Fiji Navy Diving Team at Togalevu Naval Base to strengthen his mental resilience and discipline.”

Ranuku said Ravalaca had also sparred with members of the Fiji national boxing team, who are preparing for the Commonwealth Games.

“We’re very pleased with his progress and believe he’ll be ready to perform at his best on fight night.”

He said the training camp had focused on improving Ravalaca’s speed, defence and ring IQ, while also developing different tactical approaches.

“We’ve worked on his speed, defensive skills and overall ring IQ. We’ve also prepared several game plans so he can adapt if the fight changes.”

Ranuku says the goal is to make sure that the champion remains composed and make smart decisions under pressure.

“Mika approaches every fight with professionalism and respect for his opponent.

“Our objective is to have him in peak physical and mental condition when he steps into the ring.”

He said the programme had been carefully designed to ensure Ravalaca peaked at the right time.

“We’ve structured his preparation so he enters the ring physically fresh, mentally sharp and ready to perform at his best.”

Ranuku also urges boxing fans to support the promotion.

“We encourage everyone to come out and support our local boxers. If you haven’t seen Mika fight live, this is a great opportunity. He’s determined to put on an exciting performance.”
