FABA dismisses IBA threat

"We are grateful to the Commission for supporting us lately, especially when we are doing our part to ensure our financial records are clean," Daukamakama said.

Amateur boxers will soon make a decision on whether to fight under the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA) or the new body that is affiliated under the International Boxing Association (IBA).

The emergence of the International Boxing Association (IBA) is not a threat to the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA).

This was the view of FABA president Panapasa Daukamakama.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Daukamakama said they are simply different associations.

He said FABA operates under its own rules and constitution, which prevents the two bodies from working together.

"We have our own set of rules, our FABA is under World Boxing, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC has severed its ties with IBA due to financial discrepancies, which were not transparent.

Former amateur boxing referee Seru Whippy and trainer Osea Nanovu represented Fiji at the recent IBA World Championship in Dubai.

They have indicated their intention to have IBA programmes in Fiji.

Daunakamakama highlighted that Fiji is not large enough to support two amateur boxing bodies.

"I don't think we are able to accommodate two amateur boxing associations. A sport like this needs funding. I don't know if we even have the budget to support two amateur bodies. Even now, many minor sports are struggling to get funding."

He also acknowledged the support FABA currently receives from the Fiji National Sports Commission.

"We are grateful to the Commission for supporting us lately, especially when we are doing our part to ensure our financial records are clean," Daukamakama said.

He emphasised the importance of being transparent when dealing with funding.

"The allocations must be clear. That is the only way we can continue receiving financial support. The money needs to go where it is intended to go."

Daunakamakama also warned that FABA boxers would be suspended if they compete under any IBA sanctioned programme.

"We have a constitution, and these are the rules. If you do the same in Australia or New Zealand, you will be suspended.

"So, It's not only FABA'.s rule. This is aligned with amateur boxing regulations not only in Australia, New Zealand but worldwide."
