Nadi-based Philippine businessman Erwin Sunga is exploring opportunities to strengthen sporting ties between Fiji and the Philippines, with boxing identified as a key area for collaboration.
Sunga, who has been living and working in Fiji, said both countries share a strong passion for boxing and there is significant potential for partnerships between promoters, organisations and athletes.
“I am looking to collaborate in sports in Fiji, particularly boxing,” Sunga said.
“I am a big fan of boxing, and I know there are great boxers in this country. There is an opportunity to build a stronger relationship between the two nations through the sport.”
He noted that the Philippines has produced numerous world-class fighters and is widely regarded as one of boxing’s strongest nations.
Sunga believes closer links between Fiji and the Philippines could provide local boxers with valuable international exposure while also creating opportunities for Philippine athletes to compete in the Pacific.
Potential areas of collaboration include boxing tournaments, training camps and athlete exchange programmes aimed at developing young talent.
“Sport is a powerful way to connect people and cultures,” he said.
“If we can create opportunities for athletes from Fiji and the Philippines to work together, it will be beneficial for both countries.”
Sunga said discussions were still in the early stages, but he remained optimistic that meaningful partnerships could be established in the future.
He added that any initiative would follow the guidelines and requirements set by the Boxing Commission of Fiji.
The proposal is expected to generate interest within Fiji’s boxing fraternity as the sport continues to grow across the country.
