Labasa FC’s Uqe grabs opportunity
The teenager credited senior players Taniela Waqa and Christopher Wasasala for helping him adjust to top-level football.

Labasa Muslim College Year 12 student Jovesa Uqe is making the most of his opportunity in senior football after helping Labasa secure a place in the BiC Fiji FACT semifinals.
The young left midfielder scored one of the goals in Labasa’s 4-2 victory over Rewa on Sunday, a result that sealed the Babasiga Lions’ spot in the last four of the tournament.
Uqe progressed through Labasa’s development pathway, representing the Under-14 and youth teams before earning a place in the senior squad this season.

He also featured in three Extra Premier League matches last year and continues to learn from some of the district’s experienced players.
“I thank God for His provisions in my life and for our team,” Uqe said.
“I did not expect to score against Rewa, but I trusted myself and took the opportunity when it came.”

“I am grateful to have senior players around me like Taniela Waqa and Christopher Wasasala. They have taught me discipline and the importance of being a good listener,” he said.
With a semifinal clash against Ba looming on Saturday, Uqe is focused on helping his side continue its winning run.
“Against Ba, I will do my best to help the team win,” he said.
The youngster’s rise through the ranks highlights the strength of Labasa’s player development system, with Uqe now emerging as one of the district’s promising young talents.
