Extra Supermarket Labasa football coach Alvin Chand praised his players after they ended host Lautoka’s unbeaten run with a 2-1 win in their Extra Premier League (EPL) clash at Churchill Park yesterday.

Dubbed the Babasiga Lions, the visitors used a similar approach to the one that defeated Ba on their home ground the previous weekend.

“I want to thank my boys,” the wily coach said.

“They played a massive game, especially in the second half. They showed a lot of composure and confidence when we had the ball. They enjoyed their football in the first 25 minutes. It shows the resilience of the Labasa team this season.”

Chand said Lautoka and Ba have both enjoyed strong campaigns this year.

“With due respect, they are great sides and there is still a long way to go in the season. I am happy with how the boys played over the last two weekends, knowing we had to travel continuously for away games.

“Winning both games against unbeaten teams show the hard work of the boys. The squad is in a rebuilding phase this year and the players have stepped up. Hats off to them.”

Labasa drew first blood in the third minute through Gerard Avock after a blunder by Lautoka defender Simione Nabenu. Blues created several chances but failed to capitalise as Labasa led 1-0 at halftime.

After the break, Peniasi Rotidara broke through the Lautoka defence and shot the ball past goalkeeper Atunaisa Naucukidi to extend their lead, 2-0.

However, in the 82nd minute, Rusiate Matererega pulled one back for Lautoka after tapping in from close range.

The Blues threw everything into the game to score the equaliser but it was to no avail as the Labasa defenders stood tall.
