Vunimono high goes for clean sweep

Vunimono High School (VHS) from Nausori is aiming for a clean sweep at the Extra Fiji Secondary Schools Football Association Championship in Labasa.

The four-day tournament, featuring Under-15, U17, U19 and girls’ competitions, started yesterday at five venues— Subrail Park, Labasa Sangam SKM College ground, Labasa Muslim College ground, Labasa College ground and All Saints Secondary School ground.

VHS U15 coach Sahil Chandra said the school was competing in all four grades.

“We are thankful to our sponsors, Rajen Builders Limited, Ideal Designs, Smart Security and Strength Constructions,” Chandra said.

“It cost more than $10,000 to bring a team from Nausori last weekend and then stay in Labasa until Sunday.”

He said the expenses included accommodation, travel, meals, jerseys and medical care.

The school also has the support of 10 teachers who have accompanied the teams to Labasa where they a cooking meal for the students.

“We are hopeful for a clean sweep as we have been training for over two months for this competition,” Chandra said.

He said the cold and windy weather had been challenging for the players, who were away from home, but they are determined to participate in the competition.

Chandra also thanked principal Bijen Singh for being part of the team and ensuring the safety of the students remained a priority.

U17: Labasa College 1-0 Rishikul High School, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School 0-1 Ratu Navula College

U15: Labasa College 1-0 Rishikula College.
