Growing up in New Zealand, 20-year-old Usaia Aria was grateful to make his Coral Coast 7s debut last week.

He was one of the youngest players with the Sydney-based E-Hub International side at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

There’s so much unseen talent here

The young forward who hails from Nawaka, Nadi travelled from Auckland with his parents.

“This is my first time playing at the Coral Coast Sevens and it’s been great,” Aria said.

“I’m just grateful to be here and experience this tournament.”

Aria said the biggest challenge for the team was coming together in a short space of time, with players training separately in Sydney, Auckland and Fiji before the tournament.

“This team was just put together, so we didn’t have much preparation time,” he said.

“But once we got to know each other, especially from Friday we clicked and trusted each other on the field.”

You never know who’s watching. Just give it your all every time you play

Despite being one of the youngest members of the squad, Aria said he felt comfortable playing alongside more experienced players.

“They treat me like any other player. I’ve always played with older boys, so I don’t really mind,” he said.

A rugby sevens fan, Aria said he admired the raw talent on display at the tournament, particularly from local village teams.

“I really admire the village boys and how talented they are. There’s so much unseen talent here,” he said.

Aria played club rugby and sevens while growing up in New Zealand and was part of the First XV during his college years.

Following the Coral Coast 7s, Aria will return to New Zealand before heading to the United Kingdom, where he has secured a contract to play premiership rugby.

He encouraged young players to give their best whenever they step onto the field.

“You never know who’s watching. Just give it your all every time you play,” he said.

Aria also thanked E-Hub International, the coaching staff and supporters for their backing, and expressed gratitude to his parents and siblings for their continued support.
