The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has got what it takes to beat the Chiefs in Sundays Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific clash in Christchurch, New Zealand.
This was the view of former Flying Fijians and Queensland Reds prop Peni Volavola.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, the Australian Level 2 accredited coach said the Drua has done the unthinkable by beating the Brumbies on their home ground in Canberra, last Saturday night.
“It’s tough to beat the Brumbies in Canberra,” Volavola said.
“Even the New Zealand clubs struggle every time they play there where they usually end up being second best.
“That is why in Australia, they are labelling the Drua’s win as the biggest Super Rugby upset.”
He highlighted that the Drua needs to balance their offence, contest and defence.
“Their offence or attack, contesting for pos-session in the breakdown, piece and strengthen their defence around the ruck area. They’ve got to be balance the three. No one is bigger or smaller. This is the only way they can beat the Chiefs.”
Volavola said the presence of experienced backs Manasa Mataele and Virimi Vakatawa is the mainstay of the team.
“They have wealth of experience for playing in top clubs. They have to use them a lot. Mataele with the timing of his defence and his running lines are superb.
“As well as Vakatawa making those breaks and keeping the ball alive with his off loads.”
He indicated that first-five eighth Isaiah Arm-strong-Ravula has improved in terms of his game management and executing their moves.
“Ravula needs to lift his game against Chiefs.” Volavola said debutant Maika Tuitubou would be in for a tough time but should be okay if he sticks to his game.
“Playing centre against a top club like Chiefs will be a challenge for Maika especially making those crucial tackles.
“However, if the coach has confidence in him, then we should all support him,” he added.
The match kicks-off at 4.30pm.
