Former Fiji 7s and Marist Brothers High School sprinter Randall Kamea has been assisting the Usotasi 7s team from Solomon Islands in their preparations for the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s.

The McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s that will kick off on the 15th -17th of this month.

Speaking to SUNsports, Kamea said despite the team facing a few setbacks, he is confident they will perform.

“They didn’t have a place to stay, so I brought them to my house to camp and they didn’t have a coach,” Kamea said.

The team’s preparation was supported by Marist club.

“The team will be made up of Solomon Island boys and some Marist Rugby Club boys.

“As part of development for the Solomon boys,” Kamea said.

“Some of our players have commitments.

“So, from Monday to Saturday will be our only week of full preparation,” Kamea said.

In, building up towards the McDonalds Coral Coast 7s players are now developing a strong connection during camp.

“The boys are in very good spirits. There’s been a very good bond that has formed and I think that’s the important thing,” Kamea said.

Kamea noted that communication was a big challenge.

“The biggest challenge has been the language barrier between our Fiji boys and the Solomon boys.

“But we’ve been spending time together every evening after training, just singing and telling jokes and the boys are starting to teach each other both languages. So that’s been a good help and I think just this time of the year it’s been a bit difficult to find some players to come in and join camp,” Kamea said.

The team is pooled with Aussie Select 7s, NZ Fijian Cavaliers 7s and SRS Henibua 7s.

“I think the Australian team is in our pool. So, that’s going to be a good opportunity for the boys to play against an international team and the boys are looking forward to the McDonalds Coral Coast 7’s competition,” Kamea added.
