Physicality is a key factor considered by SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 rugby head coach Andrew Osborne when selecting his final 30-member squad for the Junior World Championship in Georgia.

The tournament will be from June 27 to July 18.

“We had 35 players in camp and it was a tough selection process,” Osborne said.

“We were looking for players who could fit into the system and game plan we’re trying to implement.”

Osborne has appointed former Queen Victoria School (QVS) flanker Isoa Koroinawai as captain.

“Isoa is a leader on and off the field. He has played in the Deans competition. He has risen through the ranks to earn selection for this tour,” he said.

“He is a man of few words, but when he speaks, the players respect him.”

Fiji is in Pool D alongside France, Australia and Spain.

“We’re up for the challenge. We’re not going there just to participate. Our goal is to win all three pool matches.”

Osborne is aware that Spain would provide a physical challenge for his team.

“We have prepared for that over the last two weeks. Discipline is one of the biggest areas we need to improve on following our tour to Cape Town.”

Osborne was pleased with the feedback received from referees who officiated the team’s scrimmaging session earlier this week.

“Going into this first game, we need to minimise our errors and penalties. We have five overseas-based players who put their hands up for selection and have earned their places in the squad.”

Osborne added that Stade Français lock Setareki Turagacoke will join the squad once his club commitments in France’s Top 14 competition concludes.

Stade Français will face Montpellier in the Top 14 semi-final tomorrow at 7.05am.

“He strengthens the squad with his experience and leadership. We will make mistakes at times, but our aim is to play error-free rugby at this level.”

Osborne is hopeful his side would showcase their traditional Fijian flair at the tournament.

He has also been working closely with his first five-eighths and fullbacks on game management and kicking strategies.
