The Tide Tribe Malolo Rugby Union (MRU) is celebrating a historic achievement after five of their players were selected to join the Fiji men’s 7s training squad.

They are lanky No.8 Aminiasi Naituyaga, Isaia Rugu, Douglas Daveta, Esala Nalobo and winger Tomasi Tawake. Natuiyaga’s late dad and namesake was dubbed the ‘Steelman’ and played for Fiji when they won the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 1997.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday MRU president Ratu Jone Tuilawa expressed his pride and joy saying he was overwhelmed by the news. The selection followed Malolo’s success in winning the Skipper Cup competition.

“From my side, I’m very happy for the five boys that have been selected to the 7s squad,” he said.

“We never thought we would go that far — we thought we were just underdogs doing something great.”

Ratu Jone explained the MRU initially chose to keep the news low-key to allow the players to focus on training and earning their place in the final team. However, once photos began circulating online, the community quickly learned of their selection.

“I’m very proud of what we have achieved, and I believe this will inspire many young players to follow in their footsteps.”

He thanked the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) for trusting the young players from Malolo and giving them the chance to represent the nation on the international stage.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, he recalled their humble beginnings earlier this year, when the MRU faced financial struggles with food and camp expenses. He said this milestone would serve as an inspiration for other young players in the community.

“It will be a new environment for them — better preparation, better facilities, and a chance to represent our country.

“I’m very proud of what we have achieved, and I believe this will inspire many young players to follow in their footsteps,” he said.

Most of the Malolo rugby squad members are under the age of 25, showing the growing potential of youth talent in the region. Ratu Jone added that the selection is not only a proud moment for MRU but also a blessing for the families and community of Malolo.

“We wish the boys all the best in their training and hope some of them will wear the national jersey for the Dubai series,” he added.

The MRU now looks forward to continuing its development programmes and supporting the next generation of players aiming to represent Fiji in rugby’s highest levels.
