Former Fiji Water Flying Fijians halfback Peni Matawalu has earned another opportunity to wear the white jersey after being named in the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s national sevens training squad.
Joining Matawalu are fellow Ra players Navitalai Rabura and Waisea Lawebuka, who have been called by head coach Osea Kolinisau.
Ra head coach and former Fiji sevens star Sireli Bobo confirmed the trio’s selection to SUNsports yesterday.
“Kolinisau called me last Saturday and told me he wanted those three players,” Bobo said.
“Their performances in the Vanua Championship final against Northland caught his attention and earned them this opportunity.
“Matawalu is a former Drua player and Flying Fijians representative, while Lawebuka represented Fiji at the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, where the team won gold.
“Rabura also has experience, having played for my Sports Council Sevens team.”
Bobo thanked Kolinisau for recognising the players’ efforts and giving them a chance to impress.
“I’m especially happy for Peni. After missing out on the Drua squad, this gives him another opportunity to showcase his talent. It’s also a great chance for Rabura and Lawebuka.”
He urged young players aspiring to represent Fiji to remain disciplined.
“If you want to wear the white jersey one day, you must work hard and always have the right attitude. Talent alone is not enough. A good attitude and a strong work ethic will help you achieve your goals.”
