Faith has been the foundation behind the Ra rugby team’s campaign in their fight to win a spot in the upcoming Skipper Cup competition.

They host Northland tomorrow in the first round of the elimination draw at Narauyaba Sports ground in Rakiraki.

Ra rugby team manager Asinate Rokovaki said the team has been preparing for the past four weeks.

“It’s a very important game for us,” she said.

“It’s important for the elevation of the team, players and the province itself.”

Rokovaki said the team is camping at the Matawailevu Village Hall during their preparation phase. They are being trained by former Flying Fijians star winger Sireli Bobo as head coach with Sisa Koyamaibole being his assistant.

“We are focusing on our gameday and making sure that the players are hydrated. Training has been getting tougher on a daily basis, but the players are committed.”

Rokovaki added that the team has been polishing on their game structure and set piece.

“We don’t know the outcome, but we hope and pray that the team will take on the challenge set before them,” she said.

“We have been using the Ra High School grounds alongside the sub unions at Ra East.”

Rokovaki said they had to make alternative movements in terms of the operation and team training due to bad weather conditions.

“We are still seeking sponsors and support. Everything that the team has been going through and preparing for the past four weeks is from individual support.”

Rokovaki said former Fijian Drua halfback Peni Matawalu is part of the Ra squad.

“Matawalu is still doing rehab,” she said.

“Some of our senior players include Waisea Lewebuka and former Lautoka Maroons player Apenisa Waqawai.”

The experience of Matawalu, Lewabuka and Waqawai in the squad has greatly influenced the young players.

“It’s quite empowering and helps us make our work better,” Rokovaki said.

“We are encouraged with seeing other Vanua unions join Skipper and see their team elevated to another level is very empowering especially to the youths.”

Rokovaki extended an invitation to the supporters of Ra rugby to cheer on the team on Saturday.

“We can’t wait to go to the field and do the job,” she added.
