Waratahs prop Apolosi Ranawai did not expect his sporting career to take this path.

From a humble beginning, the Korovuto, Nadi, native was part of the Nadi Aviators RLC (rugby league club) under the leadership of Joe Gray.

This afternoon, Ranawai will play for the NSW Waratahs on Fijian soil for the first time. He is expected to come off the bench against the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua at Suva’s National Stadium.

“It’s my first time back home to play since 2018, so it’s been about eight years,” he said.

“I haven’t played here since I left Fiji in 2018. Back then I was playing rugby league under Joe Gray with this group of boys.”

Ranawai said his season with the team has been progressing well.

“I’ve just played my second game, so this will be my third game. I’m building into it and really enjoying it at the moment. I’ve shed blood and tears with this team during the season.”

Ranawai said he could not wait to run out against the Drua where his cousin and lock Mesake Vocevoce will also start from the bench.

Waratahs head coach Dan McKellar said Ranawai’s journey has been inspiring.

“He’s come the long route. It’s been challenging for him and he’s had to overcome many obstacles. But it’s a great story of resilience, courage and never giving up on your dream. I’m very proud of Apolosi,” he added.
