Former Wallabies and New South Wales (NSW) Waratahs winger Lote Tuqiri believes today’s clash between the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and the Brumbies will be another epic showdown at Ba’s Four R Stadium.
Tuqiri said both teams face an uphill battle, with the Drua hosting the Brumbies, who remain unbeaten against the Fijians since making their debut at the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific compeition.
“It’s going to be quite tough for the Drua,” Tuqiri said.
“From a record point of view, the Drua have never beaten the Brumbies. The Drua will be buoyed by playing in Ba as well.
“It’s their first time playing there and I’m looking forward to watching them do their thing at that stadium.
“It will be a great welcome for the Drua and hopefully a warm welcome for the Brumbies.”
He added that the Brumbies have traditionally played well in Fiji.
Tuqiri also outlined what the Brumbies are known for and what the Drua need to watch out for.
“They always come well-prepared. Australian teams are well-coached and know how to play in these conditions.
“They will try to keep the ball away from an open style of play.
“They will kick to the corners, keep the ball in play, rely on their forwards and try to slow the Drua down.
“It’s always tough for visiting teams to come to Fiji and play the Drua.”
His former Wallabies teammate and Rugby Australia chief executive officer Phil Waugh said he was excited to be in Fiji for the Vuvale Week.
“This week is with the Brumbies and next weekend will be with the Reds.
“We thank the support from the Australian Government’s Pacific Aus Sports programme and the close collaboration between the Fijian Drua and Rugby Australia. This has helped kick-off the Vu-vale Week activities in communities and schools,” he said.
A gym session at the Drua homebase in Legalega, Nadi, brought together key figures from the rugby and diplomatic community, including Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Peter Roberts, Rugby Australia CEO Waugh, and former Fijian-born Wallabies Tuqiri and Radike Samo.
