A 42-member Fiji Schools swimming team has been selected to compete at the 2026 Australian Schools Swimming Championships in Melbourne from July 25-30.
National Schools Age Group Swimming president Salaseini Lele confirmed to SUNsports yesterday that the swimmers were eager to represent Fiji on the international stage.
“We confirmed the swimmers have shown interest in representing Fiji Schools in Melbourne,” she said.
Lele said the swimmers had started preparations with their respective clubs and zone coaches around the country.
“Preparations have been going well,” she said.
She said the championships would provide invaluable international exposure, with Fiji's swimmers competing against some of Australia's best school athletes.
“This competition gives our swimmers the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best school swimmers in Australia. It will expose them to a higher level of competition and provide valuable experience.”
Lele said adapting to Melbourne's winter conditions would be the team's biggest challenge.
“Our main concern is the weather because it is much colder than what our swimmers are used to in Fiji. We hope they adapt quickly so it does not affect their performances.”
