Team Fiji swimmers are aiming to make history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.

The swimmers are setting their sights not only on achieving their personal best but to win medals for their country.

Head coach Willie Elaisa (pictured) told SUNsports during the team’s medical check–up at Olympic House, Suva, they have set high goals.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself.

“Normally we try to set some high expectations with the logic that you aim for the stars and land on the moon,” the Suva-based banker said.

“So, yes, we’re quite hopeful of having our best outing ever.”

Elaisa said the performances of their swimmers at the Oceania Championships have given them confidence.

He believes some swimmers are now setting goals that were previously beyond reach and are working hard to achieve them.

Elaisa said preparations are on track.

“It’s been good. They’ve been working hard.

“I guess now that they’ve formally announced the team, we’ll be ramping up for the next few weeks before we leave,” he said.

Elaisa added the national swimming team comprised of seven athletes— five men and two women.

He acknowledged there are challenges facing the sport in Fiji, particularly as many swimmers are balancing their sporting commitments with work or studies.
