Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has called on Fijians to embrace forgiveness and unity this Holi, despite the challenges posed by recent flooding across the country.
In her Holi message, Ms Kiran acknowledged that many families were celebrating under difficult circumstances, with floodwaters and damage affecting communities.
“I know these are difficult times, with flooding and widespread damage, and instead of colours, people are playing with mud,” she said.

However, she reminded Fijians that Holi has been celebrated in the country for over a century and remains a deeply special festival for families and communities.
“It is a special time of sharing and supporting each other, and to those celebrating Holi, I wish you well,” she said.
Highlighting the traditional message of “Jo Holi So Holi”, which means letting bygones be bygones, Ms Kiran encouraged forgiveness and reconciliation.
“Whatever has happened, has happened. Let the past be past, let’s forgive,” she said, noting that Holi customs often involve reaching out to those with whom there may have been disagreements, and symbolically rebuilding relationships through colours and handshakes.
She said the festival carries a powerful message of social cohesion and bridge-building, values that Fiji needs now more than ever.
“Holi brings out an important message of social cohesion and building bridges across communities,” she said.
Ms Kiran encouraged not only those celebrating Holi, but all Fijians, to reflect on the festival’s values of forgiveness, unity, and mutual support. She wished everyone a safe and meaningful celebration.
