Young miner hopes to inspire women to break stereotypes

Working in one of Fiji’s traditionally male-dominated industries has taught Ro Ateca Dretirewa Vuidreketi that success is earned through determination, not gender.

The 24-year-old Instrumentation Trades Assistant at Vatukoula Gold Mine PTE Limited (VGML) is among the contestants vying for the Vodafone Gold N Water Carnival 2026 queen's crown at Garvey Park in Tavua.

“Working in the mining industry has shaped me into a resilient and confident young woman,” said Ro Ateca, who is from Burebasaga Village in Rewa and has maternal links to Nadrau.

She said working in the mining industry had challenged her to grow both personally and professionally.

“Working as an Instrumentation Trades Assistant has challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and continuously develop my technical skills,” she said.

“It has taught me that capability is defined by commitment and hard work, not by gender.”

Ro Ateca said working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds had strengthened her appreciation for teamwork and inclusion.

“Every day, I work alongside colleagues from different communities across Fiji and beyond. Despite our different backgrounds, we share a common purpose and support one another as a team,” she said.

“It has shown me that diversity is one of our greatest strengths.”

Representing Miss VGML has given her the opportunity to encourage more young women to pursue careers in technical and trade industries.

“There is a place for everyone who is willing to learn and work hard.”

She said this year’s carnival theme, “Celebrating Unity, Embracing Diversity and Building a Resilient Fiji,” reflected the values she experienced every day in the workplace.

Through the pageant, Ro Ateca hopes to inspire young people to embrace diversity, challenge stereotypes and pursue opportunities with confidence.
