Construction of Fiji’s first-ever Super Speciality Hospital will officially begin in 2026.

This new hospital will ensure Fijians have access to advanced medical treatment locally, including cardiovascular surgery, specialised diagnostics, and digital health services, under a landmark partnership with the Government of India.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Atonio Lalabalavu told Parliament yesterday that the project represents a transformational leap for Fiji’s healthcare system, following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in August 2025 during the Prime Minister’s visit to India.

“I am pleased to inform this House that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for its construction was signed in August 2025 during the recent visit of our Hon. Prime Minister to India,” Dr Lalabalavu said.

He confirmed the land has been secured at Nadera and construction will run from 2026 to 2030.

“This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing our healthcare system,” he said.

Dr Lalabalavu said India’s Ministry of External Affairs has already started administrative processes, with tendering underway to select both the Indian company that will serve as the Project Executing Agency and the Indian concessionaire that will operate the hospital.

“Both processes run in parallel to expedite the commencement of construction,” he said.

Under the agreement, India will support the design, construction, procurement of medical equipment, and operations of the state-of-the-art super speciality hospital equipped with modern facilities and digital infrastructure. The project includes a five-year construction and commissioning period, followed by a 20-year operational and maintenance phase.

Dr Lalabalavu detailed the hospital’s proposed specialist services: cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, cardiology, general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, urology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, dental services, and ENT.

“This facility will not only enhance the quality of healthcare in Fiji. Still, it will also include a team of Indian doctors, nurses, and technicians, who will bring specialised healthcare, digital health, and telemedicine advancements to our communities,” he said.
