Infrastructure limitations, staff accommodation issues and basic facility needs continue to challenge health service delivery in several rural areas.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Penioni Ravunawa has been conducting on-site visits to health centres in the Northern Division to better understand these challenges and ensure practical solutions are implemented.

At Lagi Health Centre in Nodotuki, Cakaudrove, Mr Ravunawa met with the medical officer in charge and nursing staff to discuss concerns including boundary redefinition, proper fencing, and the need to expand clinic and waiting areas to better accommodate patients.

“These issues have been noted and will be followed up through the appropriate channels,” Mr Ravunawa said.

He later visited Wainunu Health Centre, which serves an estimated population of 3,000 people. Discussions with a doctor and staff highlighted the need for an additional water tank for staff quarters, as well as improved storage space and shelving for medical supplies.

Mr Ravunawa noted that the facility’s biomedical equipment was functional and well maintained, supporting safe maternity and primary healthcare services.

He also visited Kubulau Health Centre in Bua, where he met nurse practitioner Sesarina Qalocabeikadavu to discuss issues affecting service delivery, including staff accommodation, land and lease matters, and energy supply.

“These visits help us identify real challenges on the ground and guide our planning as we work to strengthen primary healthcare and advance universal health coverage,” Mr Ravunawa said.

He commended healthcare workers across all facilities for their dedication and resilience, particularly those serving in remote communities.

The visits form part of the Government’s broader efforts to improve healthcare access and ensure safe, quality services for rural and maritime communities across Fiji.
