Baby Robert Mathew’s eye was removed when he was three months old.

The medical procedure was done to stop the cancer from spreading to the other eye. He is nine months old now.

Yesterday he accompanied his mother, Keresi Mathew, 26, to the WOWS Kids Fiji office in Rewa Street, Suva to meet other children and parents. Ms Mathew said the event was her first and it was good to meet with other parents who had children with cancer.

WOWS Kids co-founder Sina Kami said the event was organised so parents and the organisation could meet and talk.

“We are holding this event every quarter. We were not able to do this last year because of the COVID-19 restrictions,” she said.

“Parents get to meet each other and talk among themselves. This builds a support network. We are also able to talk to the families and help them.

“Sometimes they are unable to access medicines because they are not available at the hospital.”

Ms Kami said they also helped parents with things like food packs whenever they had the resources.

She said there were 67 children with cancer who were being supported by the WOWS Kids Fiji.

She said their main focus was providing transportation for treatment and making medicines available.

Sixteen families turned up for the event in Suva yesterday.
