It was a special moment for Mosese Qionimacawa when his grandmother, Vani Seruvatu, was asked to pin the Ratu Kadavulevu School head boy’s badge on him yesterday.

The RKS church was filled to capacity as students and parents witnessed the induction of 26 prefects at the Lodoni, Tailevu-based boarding school.

Chief guest, Minister for Education Rosy Akbar, in a surprise move made way and called on a family member to do the honours.

Mrs Seruvatu had raised Mosese as an infant.

“Mosese had always been a good boy. He was the head boy at his primary school. And I know he would shine this year as well,” said the delighted woman.

Mosese hails from Verata in Tailevu and has maternal links to Rewa. He is the eldest of three siblings and also plays as a flanker for the RKS rugby team.

“I want to thank God for this opportunity. My parents and grandmother have always guided me and I believe that it is through their guidance and blessing, I am here today,” he said.

“I am looking forward to the challenges this year. We as prefects have some tough work ahead of us. There is a new direction this school is heading into and I want to be part of it.”

Dad, Mosese Qionimacawa Senior, was a happy man. He said the family had planned celebrations this weekend to mark the ocassion.

Minister for Education Rosy Akbar challenged the students to leave a legacy.

“Discipline has to be there, and it is up to you to keep the standard this school was once renowned for,” she said.

Ms Akbar also told students to ponder carefully when choosing careers. She said there were gaps to fill in the labour market and students should choose a path that will not only help them but the nation as well.

Marika Baleiwai was inducted as the deputy head boy.
