Exhibitor Impressed By Women’s Handicraft Over The Years

Liga Saro has been a participant of the National Women’s Expo since its inception in 2014.

And in that time, the 66-year-old wom­an has seen so many different crafts made by Fijian women which has im­pressed her not only has an observer but as a exhibitor herself.

Ms Saro represents the Tailevu North Group and some of the members were spotted yesterday at the Central Divi­sion Craft Show at Ratu Sukuna Park.

“Women are doing more and bet­ter job and creating more unique and beautiful crafts to showcase,” she said.

“For many of the women in my group, these crafts and items are the only source of income in the villages.

“We teach each other printing, weav­ing, sewing, jewellery and many other crafts.

“We have introduced new products every time and it has been a successful initiative every time,” Ms Saro said.

She said because most of the women are from the rural areas, they have to walk for long and travel far to come and be part of the group sessions and learn more.

She said for them it was worth it given that these lessons become income-gen­erating programmes.

“We have a Market Day coming up in April where we will showcase our prod­ucts at Korovou Town in Tailevu and people can buy them,” she said.

“These women are strong and are tal­ented.”
