University of Fiji Graduation

Without his mother’s sacrifices, grandmother’s wisdom, encouragement from his teachers and friends Ratu Manasa Radrotini Gwen would not have achieved his Bachelor of Arts degree.

“Where I am today is because of everyone who has supported me along the way,” Mr Gwen reflects after graduating from the University of Fiji last Friday.

Mr Gwen was born in the village of Nabaitavo in Naitasiri, and raised by his grandmother; she was his primary caregiver.

“My grandmother was everything to me. She taught me the value of hard work, kindness, and of never giving up. She always told me that education is key to a better life.”

His grandmother passed away when he was 15.

“Her passing left a huge gap in my life. But I knew I had to make her proud. I had to keep going, for her and for my mother.”

He attended Lomaivuna High School, then Naitasiri High School, then Form 7 at Dudley High School.

“With a single parent most times the financial burden was overwhelming; there were moments I thought about giving up. I carried the memories of my grandmother and education was a way to honour her legacy. My mum, despite the struggles of single motherhood, always supported, even if it meant sacrificing her own comfort.”

After three years of hard work, late nights, and many challenges, his degree is not just a personal achievement, but a triumph for his family and community.

“I feel so proud to wear that cap and gown; I know this is just the beginning. The journey isn’t over,” he said.

“I want to give back to my community, to help others like I was helped. I want to show that no matter where you come from, with hard work and determination, anything is possible.”
