For the second time, Harshita Lal has set a new record for Niusawa Methodist High School in the Year 12 and Year 13 examinations.

She scored 375/400 in the Year 12 examination and 389/400 in the Year 13 examination.

Her mother, Premila Naicker, who is also the school’s vice principal, was overwhelmed by her daughter’s achievements.

Mrs Naicker said it was through God’s grace and a lot of faith and hard work that she was able to achieve her goals.

“She has brought Niusawa up and set a new record for other students to feel confident that even island and maritime schools are capable of achieving great results,” Mrs Naicker said.

“She performed despite having so many limitations, no computer, very less competition, she was still able to give in her best.

“As a parent and the vice principal, I would like to say that any child can perform and can excel, provided they’re given the support.

Harshita’s father Rohit Lal said it was a great achievement not only for the school, but also for Taveuni and the whole of the Northern Division.

He said that his daughter had set a benchmark for incoming students for the whole of Taveuni.

Harshita hopes to do a Bachelor in Engineering or teach maths and physics.

“I had aimed to beat the past record of 350 which was set in 2018 and God blessed me with 389,’she said.

“ I would like to thank God for guiding and blessing me throughout my hardest times, my parents and entire extended family and teachers for their continued support and sacrifice.

“I also want to encourage all students in rural and remote areas who do not have access to proper resources.

“I come from a school which lacks proper laboratory equipment for science experiments and library books for research purposes.

“But with a lot of determination and dedication, I have set the pace for my juniors,” she added.

Only two students scored above 350 and 25 out of 28 students passed with an 89 per cent pass rate for the school.
