Tears flowed freely for Bina Raj when she saw her son, Alvin Moses, inducted as head boy of Waiqele Primary School.

“Alvin is the youngest of three children in the family and we survive on social welfare assistance,” the 49-year-old unemployed mother of Nakama, Labasa, said.

“Considering our background Alvin was surprised to be badged as head boy.”

Alvin, 13, thanked God for the opportunity.

“Last year, I was the deputy head boy, but I had no idea that the teachers would select me again,” he said.

“I want to become an engineer and being the leader of the school will help me to prepare for the future. I am also happy that I have made my mother proud today.”

He also thanked the teachers for believing in him and his friends and families for supporting him.

Twenty-nine prefects were inducted, with head girl Adi Malotu, deputy head girl Arshiya Kumar and deputy head boy Josefa Tui.
