A 17-year-old from Totoya, Lau has his sights set on New Zealand after graduating from Montfort Boys Town last Saturday.
Gabriel Embres completed his Fitting and Machining training, inspired by his uncle who works for an engineering company overseas.
“One of my uncles is an OB from fitting and machining too,” Embres said.

“He’s staying in New Zealand. I just wanted to come and go and work for him.”
Gabriel made the move from Ratu Sukuna Memorial School in Suva after completing Form 4, choosing to pursue hands-on technical training at the Veisari institution.
The transition from a mixed school to an all-boys environment proved challenging initially.
“A bit difficult from the first year,” he admitted. “After that, it’s normal.”
With maternal links to Lakeba, also in Lau, the young graduate plans to work for two years before continuing his studies.
His immediate priority is supporting those who helped him reach this milestone.
“Just to help my parents back, all they've done for me, and my family,” Gabriel said, thanking his uncles and aunties overseas, his parents and grandmothers.
His advice to young people considering their options echoed a common theme among graduates.
“Never give up on our studies. There’s always a chance and it’s better to come to this school because we’re all just running for one thing – certificate.”
